Um, you probably had something different in mind; hope this is okay. (I think it might be set in the 70s/80s, at least.)

warning for drug addiction and general messed up, but nothing more graphic than the series itself.

~

Music is in the soul (or is it?), the push and throb that claws its way from Anthy's lungs and out her throat. It's the roar of blood in her ears, a low growl, when she screams the words that make sense to her only if she closes her eyes and doesn't think too hard, doesn't question it. Music is in the soul, and Anthy's soul is hungry.

She's the most polite girl you'll meet, eyes downcast and mouth stretched in a thin smile that isn't a smile at all, so meek you will pass her by and won't notice she stabbed you between the ribs right until you're bleeding out in an alley, wondering why and how and what.

(Is that experience talking? Anthy wouldn't know. Has she killed someone in her life, or is that just artistic licence? Maybe she knows what it feels like to slide a knife into another's flesh, what it feels like when blood is oozing over her fingers, hot and dark. Maybe she doesn't. She's probably making that up, girls like her do that all the time. Don't they? She's a poet: she breathes lies.)

Her soul is hungry for what, she doesn't know, and doesn't care; her brother, her only brother, will whisper into her ear to calm the raging storm that leaves her shaking in the bathroom stall after a concert, puking her guts out. She's hungry; he'll give her what she needs. She's hungry enough that she doesn't even feel the needle sliding into her arm, into the soft skin on the inside of her elbow. By the time she notices, it's too late: the world removes itself by a magnitude of a step or two. Anthy's throat is parched, so it's just a soft rasp that escapes her mouth when she wants to call her brother.

(What's her brother's name? She wouldn't know. Does she remember growing up with a sibling, playing and letting him play with her like a small meek vacant-eyed doll, or is that just artistic licence? Maybe she knows what it feels like to have her heart ripped out and the empty place inside her chest stuffed with glass wool, scratching from the other side of her ribs. Maybe she doesn't. She's probably making the brother up, when it's her own hand that holds the needle.)

It's a bouncer that helps her out of the bathroom, and isn't it lucky that the dive Anthy's band plays at can afford a bouncer? The man avoids looking her in the eye, and Anthy knows — a step or two removed, but she knows — that he's feeling her up, just a little. Nothing more than his hand curled possessively around her hip; maybe he's too disgusted to do more, with Anthy's dirty shirt and bloodshot eyes and clammy skin. Maybe he's afraid he'll catch whatever it is she has.

People are afraid of her, those who do notice her at all. She makes people uncomfortable, she takes them by surprise. She's the girl in the subway sitting with her feet on the seat and her forehead on her knees, she's the girl sleeping at the back of the car with a guitar case for a pillow. In the summer, she's the girl who can't be bothered to hide the insides of her elbows under long sleeves. In the winter, she sleeps.

~

Music is in the soul, but Anthy doesn't think she has one.

The next time — there is always a next time — someone puts a hand over the back of Anthy's neck. Someone holds her hair back when she's throwing up. Her brother, her only brother, never does that: he only gives her what she needs.

When Anthy looks up, it's not her brother and it's not the bouncer, or any of the men who sometimes help her up, all of them smelling like stale beer and sweat. It's a girl no older than Anthy, who looks at her like she's a forest fire or the last of a failed revolution, scraped out of a cracked jar.

She asks Anthy a question; Anthy answers, though she's not sure any words make it out of her mouth.

The girl, whose name speaks to Anthy of white roses and all the chances she won't ever have in this life, takes Anthy home. Not Anthy's, because like a soul Anthy isn't sure she has anything by way of a home. There must be a place she goes to, there must be a place she eats and sleeps at, a place she spends winters wrapped in woollen dresses and velvet moths.

The girl, whose bright hair is soft under Anthy's fingers, makes Anthy want to feel. She might have been able to feel, once, but she doesn't remember. Maybe she's making that up, though. It's what she does.

The girl is called Utena, and she brings redemption. She is the revolution Anthy could never go alone, and she is the push that claws its way out of Anthy's throat, and with a certainty borne of failure Anthy knows she only exists in her mind. There could never be a girl like Utena; no girl could ever care so much, not about Anthy.

Anthy isn't a girl people care about, even those who notice her, even those she doesn't frighten.

(Has anyone cared about her? Anthy wouldn't know. If she had someone who knew her name, wouldn't she have kept them? Maybe she knows what it feels like to slide her tongue along the inside of someone's thighs, kneel over another girl and cup her breasts in her hands and kiss her, and want to be kissed in return. Maybe she doesn't. She's probably making that up.)

She's a poet: she lies. She's a liar.

She wants to lie to herself.

~

Utena gives her a soul, and Anthy can sing the way she never could before. It doesn't feel like she's dying with every shouted word, and it doesn't feel like the stage lights blind her. She still shakes in bathroom stalls, afterwards, and no matter how hard Utena tries it's not her who has the power to stand up to Anthy's brother, her only brother, and say: 'No.'

But still Anthy takes what she can; she takes the days when people turn their heads on the subway, because there's a girl sleeping at the back of the car with her head resting in the lap of another. She takes the days when Utena yells at her to stop killing herself, and when she replies that it's all she knows how to do; she's been alive for so long, she just wants to be allowed to rest.

She takes the nights when Utena catches her wrists and pins them over Anthy's head, and it makes Anthy moan out loud, which in turn makes Utena press closer, the slide of skin on skin hot enough that Anthy thinks even someone like her might be able to get warm. She takes the nights when Utena stops whatever it is she's doing, and looks up at Anthy, and frowns and asks: 'Where did you go?' Nowhere; everywhere; inside her own head. Anthy, for all that she's a poet and poets breathe lies, never has the words to answer that one. She takes the nights when it's sweet, almost too much to bear.

She doesn't want to take the nights when the music is too loud.

They walk into the clinic hand in hand; the receptionist looks first at Anthy, and then at Utena. And something in Anthy breaks, the first whispers of salvation, because it means Utena Tenjou is real. Real people see her; she must be real.

(Must she? Anthy wouldn't know. Has she ever understood how the real world works? Maybe she knows that everything is only as real as she lets it become. Maybe she doesn't.)

~

Don't take her word on any of this. She is a poet, after all: she lies.

Foxface as the victor: the girl who killed the girl on fire

Re: Hunger Games, "Foxface"

(Anonymous) 2013-01-05 04:48 am (UTC)(link)
Foxface survives the Hunger Games. She takes her crown and goes back home to the humming wires and the endless turning of heavy wheels in the generators, where her father's quiet smile is still the same and her stepmother's pinched face is a little softer. There's a little more food on the table, and they're rationed a little more light, but life goes on the same is it ever has. Foxface hides from her neighbors until they stop looking for her.

She chokes on her food when she eats it, sometimes, and she can't sleep a whole night through, but otherwise life goes on the same as it ever has.

She is the talk of the Capitol for another month, and then a new holo film comes out, long-awaited and anxiously expected, and her name is quite forgotten in the crush of the crowds at the midnight showings. An independent playwright writes a play about the tragedy of Peeta and Katniss, in which Foxface is a fiery-haired agent of fate, implacable and tragic in her own right, but it only plays twice, quietly, very off-Broadway. (The playwright will disappear years later after he publishes a book of essays about the Hunger Games and the allocation of food throughout the districts).

Foxface doesn't know anything about this. She attends the next Reaping because she has to, stands in the back of the crowd like a ghost. Knowing she won't be picked doesn't make her feel much of anything. A fifteen-year old girl, heavy and pockmarked, and a wide-eyed twelve-year old boy are plucked from the crowd. Mothers cry. Fathers drink. Life goes on the same as it ever has.

Neville pulls the sword from the Sorting Hat and slices through Nagini, then through Voldemort, and in the end it's as easy at that. It's not even magic, really.

Everyone waits for Voldemort to rise, for something to happen, but the body on the ground is as still as the one cradled in Hagrid's arms.

There is no cheering, only Hagrid's broken sobs filling the air until there's nothing left to breathe.

They are waiting for him, Neville realises, and with lungs full of sorrow he raises the sword above his head as the crowd roars to life once more.

“Watching you sing makes me want to puke,” Hanna says, and reaches up to help Emily hop down from the stage. “I mean, sometimes. Because you’re so good and that totally sucks for the rest of us.”

Emily’s frown is as pretty as she is, pretty and graceful and not a little confused. She shakes out her hair and tries to smile. “Sorry?”

“And by rest of us, I mean, of course, me.” Hanna links her arm through Emily’s and pulls her up the aisle. “Don’t apologize!”

Out in the hall, three dancers pirouette past, closely followed by a pair of mimes jostling one very tall boy in a cape. When they pass, Spencer is revealed, fiddling with her locker while muttering darkly. “No blown ambition doth our arms incite,/But love, dear love, and our ag'd father's right --” She glances darkly over her shoulder when Hanna tugs on her hair. “What? I’ve got rehearsal in five.”

Hanna tugs herself closer along Emily’s side and smiles as winningly as she can, drawing on all her years of experience as Fat Happy Baby. (Sure, those years are more than a decade gone now, but you work with what you know.)

“We’re cutting to go to lunch!”

Emily stiffens; nearly imperceptibly, but the line of her jaw clarifies and the skin around her eyes tightens. “We are? I have pointe this afternoon...”

Hanna shakes her and says a little more loudly. “We are! And Spencer needs to remove the codified lead shakes-spear from her butt or she’ll be attending the 2020 Tonies solo.”

“Please,” Spencer says and finally gets her locker door open. “If I’m not at least a nominee by 2015, I’ll just give up, move to Westchester and get knocked up.”

“The scary thing is,” Hanna stage-whispers in Emily’s ear, “she’d be the best stage-mom ever.”

Emily shivers at the tickle of Hanna’s breath and closes her eyes. She doesn’t have the time to get distracted again, not by another girl. This could start being a pattern. Never mind how bouncy and weird and warm Hanna is, how she touches so much, so un-self-consciously, all the time.

Emily tries to disentangle her arm and step away, but Spencer’s locker door has her boxed in.

“Come on, guys,” Hanna implores. “I miss you! Please?”

Those big eyes she turns on them are irresistible.

It doesn’t hurt that the freshman doo-wop group is crooning “Love Me Do” right behind them.

(Also features gratuitous mixing of Storybrooke and FTL names! WHY NOT.)

The police aren’t keen on hiring werewolves, which has never made much sense to Ruby; you’d think they’d want the nose on their side. And Mary – well, she has nowhere else to go.

No one wants to be caught crossing her stepmother.

But she’s an asset to the business; for one thing, her typing is a hell of a lot better than Ruby’s has ever been. And for another, she’s actually a pretty good investigator in her own right. Ruby’s glad to call her a partner.

(And if they occasionally end up in bed together after a long case, or a long night at the bar, or... really, without much provocation at all, Ruby can’t say she minds that, either.)

They’re minding their own business one afternoon when a guy comes in. Ruby’s eyes tell her he’s cute; her nose tells her he spends a lot of his time outdoors (her kind of man, then). He hesitates in front of Ruby’s desk for so long that she finally decides to lend him a hand.

“How can we help you?”

“I – I’ve heard you’re good at finding people?” he says, uncertain and maybe a touch hopeful.

“We do a pretty good job, I like to think. Who’ve you lost?”

“My wife. Well, my ex-wife – we were just finalizing the divorce.”

Mary raises an eyebrow. “We don’t see many exes looking for our help. They’re usually pretty upset to see us.”

The guy shrugs. “Well... I know Abigail. We weren’t splitting on bad terms, it’s just that our parents set us up in the first place and we never really clicked. She only has good things ahead of her. There’s no reason for her to disappear like this.”

“Okay.” Ruby pulls out a notebook. “Mr. Nolan, I presume?” Abigail Nolan, formerly Goldberg, has quite a reputation in political circles, which leaves Ruby inclined to take this guy at his word. Besides, he doesn’t smell like he’s lying.

Worried, definitely; lying, not so much.

He nods. “Please, call me James. I moved out of the house last month, so I can’t give you a full timeline, but I know she had a meeting with the mayor last night.”

Out of the corner of her eye, Ruby sees Mary blanch, but James glances her way before Ruby can mention it – and Mary puts on a brave face for him. Interesting.

“Wouldn’t be the first time someone got on Her Gracious Majesty’s bad side.” The nickname’s one Ruby’s picked up from one too many cases around the local criminal underworld, but despite its roots, there’s a ring of truth to it. Regina Mills hasn’t shown any sign of giving up office without one hell of a fight.

And with election season coming up, and Abigail Nolan having expressed some interest in the seat before? It’s starting to sound like a motive to her. Of course, whether it sticks is a question of evidence, not to mention who gets to Gold first; he’s known to play both sides of any given altercation like a fiddle, but it’s easier to talk him into seeing maximum benefit from your side if you get the first word.

“No, it wouldn’t.” James sighs. “That’s what has me worried. Just because I never loved Abigail doesn’t mean I wished any harm on her.”

“We’ll see what we can find out. Thanks for letting us know.”

James smiles, a little shakily. “Thank you both.”

After he leaves, Ruby turns to Mary. “You all right?”

“Yeah. I’ll be fine. It’s just – why does everything come down to tangling with my stepmother?”

“Probably because the police are too chicken to do it themselves.” Ruby pulls Mary into a hug. “Don’t worry. We’ve done this often enough that we know how to work around her – you’ll hardly know she’s a part of this. Worse comes to worst, I’ll let you go interview James some more.”

“Ruby! He’s married! Technically, anyway.” Mary’s blushing; Ruby can tell that without pulling away from the hug.

“All the more reason for us to find Abigail, then. If we can talk him into it, I don’t think he’d mind sharing us – I know I wouldn’t.”

Mary blushes even harder, and breaks the hug. “We should. Leads. Figure out which ones we have.”

Ruby laughs. “Yes, dear.”

Pappy gets shot in the foot and Rudy gets shot in the head -- a clean killshot. They make it out of the ambush thanks to drastic action on Nate's part, thanks to Brad keeping the platoon in line by shouting down the comms. There's nothing Doc Bryan can do but to cas-evac Pappy, to declare Sgt. Rudolfo Reyes dead.

This is war. They all knew what they were getting into. It's not the first body and it won't be the last; Rudy was closer to them than any of the Haji bodies they see lying in a ditch, than any of the ones they've wasted. Maybe it's selfish or cynical or natural, but that makes all the difference. They grieve as only marines can: telling loud and boisterous stories, fighting harder, sleeping less. There's no more november juliet for the rest of their deployment, for none of them. No one makes it as good as Rudy did and no one touches his espresso maker.

Some of them don't grieve: Brad can't let himself because if he loses it, if the iceman fucking loses it, how can they expect the rest of the platoon to keep up appearances? He's holding up Ray and Walt and Poke, spending an hour standing next to Manimal with their shoulders touching and no words because Manimal is an asshole and a competent marine and Rudy's death hit him and Chaffin the hardest - after Pappy, but Pappy's not here and Pappy's absence stings but at least they know that he'll make a recovery. The same can't be said for Rudy.

Nate can't let himself because he's holding together an entire platoon. Combat command is the loneliest job in the world.

They stop talking to each other beyond the necessities; there's no more shared glances and long silences and silent comfort to be taken from standing close, bowed over a map with their fingers never quite touching. They've stopped by mutual agreement; Brad knows if he let himself drift close to Nate again, if he gave in to the pull that's been between them since the start, neither of them would be able to hold it together for long.

Out of all the men in the platoon, neither of them can afford to fall apart.

Stateside, they don't see each other again. Just like that, it's over. The war isn't, but it is for them: they've gone home, they're back on solid ground. Just like that, they're in another world again and here, no one relies on them and no one needs them to keep it together. Brad spends a week surfing and riding his bike and collecting even more speeding tickets and fucking one whore after the other. He doesn't know what Nate does. It shouldn't matter.

Nate leaves the Corps and Captain Morel - who couldn't replace Nate and didn't try - dies. It doesn't hit as hard as Rudy's death does; they didn't know Morel the same way, he was an officer not a grunt. All Brad can think about is what if. What if Nate hadn't left the Corps? What if this was Nate's body being loaded onto a chopper?

Somehow, Brad finds himself on Nate's doorstep in New England; he's drunk and his eyes are dry and his hands are still even though he feels like he's shaking inside.

"I heard—" Nate says. They stare at each other silently and a second later they're moving, crashing into each other.

It helps.

I kind of adore this idea. And by kind of, I mean so darn much I might float a foot off the floor. :D! I only wish I knew the characters well enough to manage this, because if I were a little more confident in them, I would so be scribbling now. As is, I really, really hope someone writes this!

All the stories you've told (will live on) [Al Potter][G]

[personal profile] dree 2013-01-06 06:14 am (UTC)(link)
Al has been listening to stories all his life. Happy ones. Stories from Before.

(People like to remember life in happier times.)

It seems like everyone has a story worth telling. Some are better at it than others - Uncle Percy's, for example, are dry and factual, hardly stories at all. The trick, Al has learned, isn't in the telling. It's in the listening.

You've got to listen to the silences, as well as the words.

And Al has learned a lot. About little things and big things and interesting things. Mostly, he's learned about Her.

Nobody ever mentions Her name - they rarely mention Her at all. And Al knows what that means.

(It means She's important.)

Uncle Ron talks about Her, sometimes.

Only about the Her from Before, though. The smart little girl he met on the Hogwarts Express.

Uncle Ron always seems a bit brighter - a little less broken - when he's telling those stories.

(Al's dad always looks sadder.)

And Al knows.

It's Her.

Somehow, She's behind all the silences in the Weasley-Potter's household.

She's the reason they're all living together - Grandma and Grandpa, Al's parents and siblings and uncles, aunts and cousins -, She is why they haven't been to Diagon Alley in years, or anywhere in the Muggle world either.

(He doesn't quite know how, though.)

So, when it's Al's time to go to Hogwarts - finally! - and there's no Hogwarts Express, he knows it's because of Her, too. But Al's going to Hogwarts, and that's what matters. So he'll go by Floo - he'd have gone by foot if he'd had to. He's been waiting for his turn for years, he knows the stories by heart.

And, if - outside of the stories - it's not quite the same, it's alright.

Al gets to live it, now.

It's not… it's not perfect. Everything isn't well. But it's enough.

(It has to be.)

"Colonel, watch out!" Riza drew her bow and fired on the nymph, a water elemental who stood between them and their goal: the Philosopher's Stone. Some say it could turn lead into gold.

The elemental shifted, and Riza's arrow passed through her harmlessly, doing no more damage to the nymph than as if Riza had fired on a waterfall. Fog swirled around them, obscuring her vision. Roy stood beside her, inscribing a complex circle in the dirt with his staff. Above, the nymph readied itself for another attack, swirling in the air like a great malicious wave preparing to break upon them.

"Colonel, get back! Fire magic won't work against a water elemental." Riza tried to reach for Roy, but it was too late; the nymph's attack crashed down on them like a tidal wave. Riza stumbled backward, thrown by the force of the attack. Water rose up around them until she was kicking her feet just to keep her head above the water. Roy's robes must be weighing him down, she thought frantically. He's useless in the rain.

As she struggled to keep her head above the choppy waves, Riza suddenly felt her feet hit solid ground again. The air above her crackled and burned, hot enough to evaporate the magical sea and dry her hair and clothing, though Roy's protective magic ensured that she was safe from any burn effects.

"I can break apart the hydrogen in the water," laughed Roy, "and use that for my flames!"

"Colonel," sighed Riza, pushing her game piece over to the next square, the elemental at the waterfall gate thus vanquished. "You're supposed to have weaknesses in the game. It makes things more interesting. "No wonder Edward won't play with you."

The train rumbled beneath them, making the pieces tremble. Riza grabbed the board before it could slide from the table. They were so close to reaching the Philosopher's Stone, she didn't want to start over again. She wasn't so interested in the Philosopher's Stone, but in the love story that had developed between the ranger and the mage.

Sorry if that wasn't quite what you were expecting…
