Something to start on-Red/Peter, Granny-Once Upon a Time-PG

[personal profile] ceitfianna 2013-01-13 03:25 am (UTC)(link)
She was hungry and wanting until a scent, something more hit her, she whined and smelled fear but something else. Her ears were sharp but not good at deciphering human speech yet she heard, "Red, Red, come back to me. If you can't, if you're lost in there, kill me quickly."

She hid her face and laid down at his feet while he watched her, not daring to touch her yet. This wasn't right but nothing had been right until that smell, him. In the stable, they stayed, her head in her paws, him waiting and talking to her as if she was herself not a monster.

When the dawn came, he wrapped his cloak around her as she trembled and asked, "How did you know?"

"I wondered and tried to find out about your family. It wasn't easy but you're who I want. I didn't know enough to speak to you, I was scared."

"But even so, this shouldn't have worked. Peter, how could this work?"

"Because I love you and we need to get you home and find out the truth."

"She won't tell us," Red said into his shoulder, her grandmother was secretive and protective.

"Shh, yes, she will because we need to know if we're going to figure out how to build a life together," His voice was soothing, he always knew how to make her believe in more, but could this be possible.

The forest wasn't kind and she was a monster. She wouldn't let go of him, but she could kill him. This was a chance that wouldn't last. Yet he didn't let go of her as they made their way back to Granny's, he held her, stroking her hair and kissing her. Granny stared at them as they entered and he said, "There's much we need to discuss. We won't be leaving yet but someday. For now we need to create a better way to live."

"Please, grandmother, I don't want to lose him."

Her grandmother watched them and sighed as it was clear she didn't like this, but it wasn't up to her, "Get dressed, Red and get some food. You'll be hungry and tired. This will take some time."

They talked all through the day until Red was asleep in Peter's arms and Granny looked at the two of them, together and said, "You have my blessing and all my hopes. I want her to be happy and safe."

"That's what I want as well and we can make it true."

"Hope's something to start on."

"Yes, it is and we won't stop until we've made a good life for ourselves," He kissed the top of Red's head and Granny nodded for him to take her and rest. Perhaps they could change their destiny.

I know this was filled but this episode needed a retcon so desperately I'm throwing in another one.

------

"No! No!" he screamed. He was chained, he was thoroughly chained-- of course it was thorough, he'd done it himself.

The wolf-- Red-- No, it was a wolf, through and through, there was no Red there-- bit his shoulder, its teeth grazing his neck, its massive jaws tearing through his chest. He screamed.

The smell of the blood seemed to craze the wolf. Its jaws still embedded in his shoulder, it shook its head furiously, tossing him from side to side.

It was strange. He wondered why it didn't go for the throat, or the stomach. Why wasn't it letting go? why wasn't he already ripped apart, bloody pieces? The wolf was still shaking him, slamming him violently against the tree. He felt, he heard, his bones crack.

But it still wasn't letting go. It was pawing at him now, it's massive claws ripping gouges in his flesh, it was pawing almost-- frantically, he thought, and he realized it wasn't unlocking its jaws from his shoulder because it-- because it couldn't.

The chains. The chains that crazy, deranged trader had given him. "Particularly effective against wolf!" he'd giggled, in that weirdly high-pitched sing-song voice of his.

How stupid, Peter hadn't even thought of it. He'd brought the chains when Red had told him, but not because he'd remembered-- they'd just been there, the first thing he'd grabbed-- odd, really, because they were so rusty and thin and he could have had better ones, thicker, stronger ones, his father was the blacksmith after all--

Not that it had helped much, and he was dying, anyway. What did it matter that the wolf's jaws were stuck, clamped to his shoulder and unable to move-- and now also the wolf's paws, somehow, had managed to grow tangled in the chains. His stomach was flayed open, all loose strips of claw-mangled flesh, his arm was half-off, and he was bleeding to death.

He was going to die, he thought. At some point the wolf had stopped moving, had grown thoroughly entangled with the chains that seemed to freeze it wherever they touched, and they were lying there together on the crimson snow, and he was dying.

He was dying, and-- he was dying, and it was okay.

"It's okay," he said, and managed somehow to lift his left arm, the one not currently clamped in a wolf's jaw. There wasn't much leeway, not with any slack in the chain having somehow managed to twist its way around the wold instead. But he managed it, and somehow he rested his hand in the blood-matted fur.

Underneath the fur was thick, and soft.

Underneath the fur, somewhere locked away, was Red, he thought, and almost unconsciously his fingers made a stroking motion. The wolf, still struggling limply against chains that seemed to tighten with every movement, whimpered.

He remembered Red's eyes, glowing. All night, she'd said, every night. They hadn't thought every night would turn out to be just one-- but still, in some sense, they'd kept their promise to each other.

The world was swimming out of focus. He blinked, trying to keep it together. Only a few moments left to be alive, he wanted them.

Soon the hunters would be here. They would kill her. They would kill his Red. He had to tell them. He had to tell them not to. He had to tell them not to kill her. He had to--

That was the last thought he had, his eyes closing, his breath slowing to a halt.

---

Pain pain pain pain agony agony agony fire fire he was on fire pain pain pain pain pain.

Every breath was torture, and that meant, somehow, insanely, he was breathing.

Someone was changing his bandages. He opened his eyes, saw only a glowing blur and the influx of light made new, fresh waves of pain lash through him.

And yet.

"Red?" he said, or rather he tried to, but no sound came out-- his voice, there was something very wrong with his voice-- and then he passed out, again.

---

He lapsed into a feverish non-awareness. In his lucid moments-- if they could be called that-- it seemed to him there were cool, slender hands, giving him a drink, wiping his brow.

When at last he resurfaced, her name was the first thing on his lips.

"Red?" He said, and although he said it with all the strength he could muster it came out a gravely whisper.

"It's Mary," a voice said, female, not Red.

"Red?" he said, again, frantic energy surging through him. He struggled, trying to sit up, but he couldn't move--

"She's- she's okay," the voice said. But it was impossible to miss the pause, the hesitation.

"You're lying," he said, "where is she-- oh god, the hunters, oh god, they killed her, I didn't tell them not to, they killed her."

"What-- no! She's alive," the girl said. "She's- She's over there."

She pointed, and he tried to see where she pointed, his vision swimming, but it seemed to him he saw something red, in a heap.

"Oh." he said. "Oh."

And he began to cry, not real sobs or anything, just water leaking from his eyes silently. One sob escaped but it made everything inside him hurtburnshred with pain.

"I hurt all over," he said.

"That's because you're injured all over," she said. "Don't move."

"How bad is it?" he said. "Don't spare my feelings."

She hesitated.

"Bad," she said at last. "Definitely bad. But--"

"But?" he said.

"But by this point it seems the worst is over. So. I guess you made it."

"By this point?" He said, and hesitated before asking. "H-How long has it been?"

She didn't answer for a moment, busying herself wringing out bandages. "Over a month," she said, at last.

"Over a month?" He repeated, his mouth saying the words but his brain not really comprehending.

"Actually nearly two months," she said.

"I-- I see," he said. "and I've been unconscious this entire time."

"Pretty much," she said. "But. But it's not so surprising, really. You were-- you were really badly torn up."

"Give me the inventory," he said. Paused. "I've already noticed the arm."

"I thought you might have," she said. "I'm sorry-- that I couldn't save it."

"I was dead," he said. "You saved my life. I don't think I'll quibble over an arm or two. C'mon, give me the inventory."

Her lips quirked.

"Alright," she said. "You had more broken ribs than unbroken ones, but thank God your spine was somehow spared. You had a cracked shoulder blade and a dislocated hipbone. A really nasty break in your left leg. Pretty much every spare inch of you was cut up, but your stomach and upper left torso were particularly bad-- It didn't seem like there was enough left there to even stitch together."

"She was trying to get her muzzle free," he said, an explanation, almost apologetic. "It got-- it got stuck."

"Ah." She said.

There was another one of those pauses.

"I had-- I did wonder why. Why you weren't--"

"Shredded to bits?" He said, cheerfully. "Doggy chow?"

"Um. Yes." she said.

"The chains appear to have been magic," he said. "I don't suppose you still have them-- could come in handy."

"They disintegrated. When-- When Red turned back."

"Oh."

"One use magic, I guess," she said.

"I suppose so," he said.

"They did what they needed to," she said. "I honestly-- we didn't think we would make it in time. We came as soon as-- When Granny told me-- but we knew, really, that it was hopeless, that it was too late."

"Granny?" he said. "Where is she?"

There was a very long pause.

"I think-- I think I'll tell you later," she said. "Please."

He was going to press it, but he looked at her, eyes shadowed from lack of sleep, and he decided to let it rest.

"How did you know what to do?" he said, softly.

"I'm sorry?" she said.

"You just listed a pretty long list of things wrong with me. What did you do to fix me? That's not the kind of medicine a girl your age knows how to do," he said.

She looked down at her hands.

"I've had-- I've had an interesting life," she said.

"I'll bet," he murmured. Her hands were twisting in her lap, and he decided to give this topic, too, a rest. He wasn't sure he wanted to even know what kind of interesting made one able to speak, so casually, of shredded flesh and broken bones.

"You should get some rest," he said.
